Apprentice Program

For children age 14 and up interested in learning how to teach swimming lessons.

The apprentice will work as an assistant teaching some of the classes. During this “try out stage,”   I will teach them the basics of swim instruction and how to teach on a child’s level.  At the end of the summer, I will evaluate each apprentice.  Those that show potential will be invited back the next year.

During the 1st year “try out stage,” there will be no compensation. The first year is merely training and evaluation to determine the future potential of each student. At the end of the 1st year, each apprentice will receive an evaluation on their teaching and will also take a swim skills test in which the student must properly perform all of the strokes taught in the Level 6 Sharks class (see Sharks page for a list of those strokes).   If the apprentice performs satisfactorily on the evaluation, skills test. and has shown proper teaching ability in working with small groups of students, he/she will be invited back for a 1-year internship program.

During this program, the interns will continue to assist in teaching classes and may be allowed to teach a few classes by themselves with supervision as they become ready. During the 1-year internship program, students will be paid for the hours they work. After the 1-year paid intern program, students who possess the qualities we look for may be offered a teaching position each summer upon successful completion of a Red Cross certified lifeguard course.
